Minorities in the Media: A
United Solution
The mass media continues to impact
people’s lives by being the main source of real time
information about the society they live in as well as
societies across the globe. With the advent of the
Al-Jazeera phenomena as well as the influx of other key
niche media channels, online blogs and real time news feeds,
the media landscape has transformed and audiences can now
get a multitude of differing voices and opinions about the
same issue from different media channels.
War on terror, migration,
nationalism, anti-social behaviour, multiculturalism and
community isolation dominate the media platform in the UK by
journalists competing with one another for an insatiable
demand for the latest images, stories and information.
But how does this war on words
affect the ever growing ethnic minority groups in the UK?
With over 15 million ethnic minority groups - due to
increase by 15% by the year 2010 - does the mass media
present and represent them?
The media is under constant attack
by minorities who have often spoken of the implicit unspoken
racism in the media, flamed by the desire for getting the
next big story. Many feel that key minority groups have long
been misrepresented and negatively stereotyped in Western
media across the globe.
Many believe that the media’s ever
increasing influence on public opinion has given it the
power to manipulate the mainstream populations views and
opinions, which has in turn led to increased racially
motivated attacks.
This ground breaking media
conference explores the complex topic of minorities in the
media and discusses a united solution for the very first
time and sets that stage for a unique collection of voices
to share their ideas and opinions on this very current and
controversial issue. |
